I left Benin on June 29, and have had time to reflect on the incredible experiences I had. The UA in Benin program was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, especially because it was a faculty-led program in our professor’s hometown. Having a local guide us through Benin, introducing us to new places and experiences, was very valuable and relieved so much stress I might have felt if I had traveled alone.

Taking courses at the University of Abomey-Calavi was unforgettable. I met many Beninese students my age, and it was fun to compare our life experiences and share our future goals. They loved practicing their English with us, and I was thrilled to be surrounded by the French language, and got to hear Fongbè which I had never heard of before arriving. The students were very nice and definitely one of the highlights of my trip.

Benin’s beauty left me in awe, with its rich culture and so many happy people. The country is growing rapidly, and is very evident with construction everywhere. My favorite area was Cotonou’s Hai Vive district, where I saw people from around the world, some visiting, others investing in business opportunities. It was beautiful to see such global diversity in a small nation. I hope to return to Benin later in life to see how the nation has developed, and I will definitely always keep the country close to my heart.
