When I was preparing to study abroad, the most intimidating thing for me was the idea of culture shock. I feared that culture shock would stop me from enjoying my visit to Copenhagen to the fullest. However, I was so very wrong! Of course, the first few days felt unfamiliar–the language, the food, and even the rhythm of daily life seemed different–but rather than overwhelming me, these differences slowly drew me in. I discovered that Danes are incredibly welcoming, with a calm friendliness that made me feel at ease even when I needed to ask for navigation help or had questions about food on the menu at a restaurant. I have fallen in love with the simple way of life here, like sitting at a cafe for a slow breakfast and coffee or walking through the city shops and taking time to appreciate the combination of new and old architecture.

Through this experience, I’ve learned that culture shock wasn’t a wall to overcome, but a door inviting me to embrace something new. By stepping into Danish culture, I’ve learned to appreciate every piece of my day, and as cliche as it sounds embrace the small things. Studying abroad in Copenhagen didn’t just meet my expectations–it transformed them.

As far as the simple things go, the Danes do it right. A traditional breakfast here is a sourdough bun with cheese and butter, a BMO. You can find a BMO anywhere and it is the perfect way to start the day.
