Wrapping up my semester abroad in Spain has been so bittersweet. One of the most meaningful parts of my time there was volunteering as an assistant English teacher at Grevol Elementary School. I got to work with kids from all over the world, and honestly—it changed me for the better!
Every day in the classroom was full of laughter, creativity, and pure joy. These sweet, curious, brilliant little humans reminded me just how much light there is in the world. From silly games to proud “aha!” moments, I saw firsthand how powerful connection and encouragement can be, even across language barriers.
The kids weren’t the only ones learning—I learned so much from them, too. Patience, presence, and how to celebrate the little wins. I genuinely think I could hang out with 7-year-olds for the rest of my life and be totally content.
The teachers and staff at Grav were incredible. They welcomed me in and my roommates, supported us, and made us feel like part of the team from day one. That school community will always hold a special place in my heart.
Leaving was hard. Saying goodbye to the students, the school, and this chapter of my life hit me way harder than I expected, especially after the sweet book all the students made. But I’m walking away feeling so full. Thankful to God for every laugh, every lesson, and every connection.
If you’re a student at Bama thinking about studying or volunteering abroad—do it. Jump in. You never know how much it might mean to you (or the people you meet). I went to Spain hoping to help out a little—and ended up gaining more than I ever imagined.
Roll Tide forever!!
