Hi, I’m Amelia from New Orleans, I am preparing for my study abroad adventure in Benin, Africa. As a student in the foreign languages and literature program, I’ve always been drawn to francophone cultures. Growing up surrounded by several francophone communities made me realize just how much I still don’t know about their diverse histories and traditions. That’s why I chose Benin—to immerse myself fully and learn the culture and language through hands-on experience.

I’m feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness, which I think is just right. I hope to build meaningful relationships, grow personally, and gain a real perspective on life in a different part of the world. Of course, I do worry a little about the intense heat—I’ve heard the sun can be relentless—but I’m ready to face it head-on. Talking with my family and friends really helps me manage these mixed emotions; their support keeps me grounded.

Speaking of family and friends, they’re incredibly excited and supportive of my journey. They’re my rock, especially when I feel overwhelmed or uncertain. They remind me to focus on the incredible opportunity in front of me. Even with the time difference, I plan to stay connected with them through regular calls, texts, and messages. I know staying in touch will be crucial for both my comfort and theirs.

This study abroad experience is about more than just academics—it’s about growing, seeing the world through fresh eyes, and chasing my dreams with courage. I can’t wait to share everything I learn and experience along the way. Thanks so much for following my journey! If you’ve studied abroad or are planning to, I’d love to hear your stories or advice.
