Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport…which is where I’ll be in less than 24 hours!
I came across the UA in Oxford program last fall and knew it was the perfect opportunity for me. As an Honors History major, the course offerings were perfect for my degree and I have dreamed of studying abroad in England since I can remember. It’s hard to believe that I’m waiting on the plane to take me there now!
The preparation for studying abroad has been a long process. I have been collecting various items (most from Amazon!) and pieces of advice from experienced travelers over the past few months, which has made me feel much more confident about my departure. In my suitcase, you’ll find lots of layers, as summers in Great Britain are unpredictable; an extra pair of walking shoes, in case the first get wet from the inevitable rain; a new book to read in the Botanical Garden at Oxford; and, most importantly, an umbrella! This is my first time going abroad by myself, so I’m still a little nervous, but being well-prepared has definitely helped to ease my nerves.
As I wait for my flight, I can feel the excitement and anticipation for my time abroad. I’m eager to meet new friends and explore new places, creating countless memories along the way. Though leaving home and what’s familiar is still a little scary, those feelings are overwhelmed by my enthusiasm of getting to call Oxford my new home for the next few weeks! This whole experience still seems unreal, and I can’t wait to take it all in. But for now, I’ll be sipping on my last sweet tea from Chick-fil-A before my first High Tea in England!
