Hey there, fellow travelers and curious minds! I’m thrilled to share my exciting study abroad experience in the enchanting city of Antigua, Guatemala. As a doctoral student at the University of Alabama, immersing myself in Latin American history and politics has been a dream come true.

Preparing for this trip was an adventure in itself. From researching the vibrant culture of Guatemala to packing my bags with anticipation, every moment was filled with excitement. And of course, no journey is complete without a few unexpected delays, and detours which only added to the thrill of the experience.

As I arrived in Antigua, a UNESCO World Heritage site, I was immediately captivated by its beauty. Cobblestone streets, colorful colonial architecture, and breathtaking views of the surrounding volcanoes welcomed me with open arms. It was like stepping into a time capsule, where history comes alive at every corner.

Exploring this historic gem was an absolute delight. The city’s rich cultural heritage unfolded before my eyes as I ventured through its vibrant markets, sampled traditional cuisine bursting with flavors, and marveled at the grandeur of its ancient ruins. Whether I was wandering through the enchanting Parque Central or strolling along the bustling streets, there was always something new and intriguing to discover.

But the true highlight of my journey was the opportunity to study Latin American history and politics in this immersive setting with Dr . Chris Hale and my peers. Engaging with local scholars and fellow students from diverse backgrounds enriched my understanding of the region’s complexities. From thought-provoking discussions on social movements to examining the impact of colonialism, every class session ignited my passion for social justice and global awareness.

Beyond the academic realm, I had the privilege of connecting with the warm-hearted Guatemalan people. Their stories, resilience, and vibrant traditions leave a lasting impression on my heart. From witnessing traditional Mayan weaving techniques to dancing to the infectious rhythms of marimba music, I have immersed myself in the local culture, embracing every moment as a cherished learning opportunity.

As my time in Antigua draws to a close, I find myself It has expanded my horizons, challenged my perspectives, and fostered lifelong connections. My journey of fun, exploration, and discovery has not only deepened my knowledge of Latin American history and politics but has also ignited a burning desire to contribute to positive change in the world.
